Inviscid coalescence of drops

چکیده
We study the coalescence of two drops of an ideal fluid driven by surface tension. The velocity of approach is taken to be zero and the dynamical effect of the outer fluid (usually air) is neglected. Our approximation is expected to be valid on scales larger than ℓ ν = ρν 2 /σ, which is 10nm for water. Using a high-precision boundary integral method, we show that the walls of the thin retracting sheet of air between the drops reconnect in finite time to form a toroidal enclosure. After the initial reconnection, retraction starts again, leading to a rapid sequence of enclosures. Averaging over the discrete events, we find the minimum radius of the liquid bridge connecting the two drops to scale like r b ∝ t 1/2 .

Scaling law in liquid drop coalescence driven by surface tension
This Letter reports experimental results on the coalescence of two liquid drops driven by surface tension. Using a high speed imaging system, we studied the early-time evolution of the liquid bridge that is formed upon the initial contact of two liquid drops in air. Experimental results confirmed the scaling law that was proposed by Eggers et al. based on a simple and yet elegant physical argum...
متن کاملCoalescence of Liquid Drops
When two drops of radius R touch, surface tension drives an initially singular motion which joins them into a bigger drop with smaller surface area. This motion is always viscously dominated at early times. We focus on the early-time behavior of the radius rm of the small bridge between the two drops. The flow is driven by a highly curved meniscus of length 2πrm and width ∆ ≪ rm around the brid...
متن کاملThe Influence of Bicomponent Mixed Surfactants on Drop/Interface Coalescence
Effects of binary mixtures of ionic/nonionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate/2-heptanol or 1-decanol) and nonionic/nonionic surfactants (2-heptnol/1-decanol) on drop/interface coalescence of water drops in a continuous n-heptane phase were examined. The drop size reduced appreciably and the multi-step coalescence was suppressed finally as the concentration of each of the constituting components</em...
متن کاملControlled electro-coalescence/non-coalescence on lubricating fluid infused slippery surfaces
Aqueous drops on silicone oil infused lubricating surfaces are cloaked with a thin layer of oil to minimize their surface energy. These oil cloaked aqueous drops exhibit pseudo-stable coalescence or spontaneous coalescence depending upon the lubricating oil thickness which controls the interaction point of the drops. For thick oil films, drops interact with each other through the surrounding oi...
متن کاملStagewise Modeling of Liquid-Liquid Extraction Column (RDC)
Stagewise forward mixing model considering coalescence and redispersion of drops was used to predict the performance of Rotating Disc Liquid-Liquid Extraction Contactors. Experimental data previously obtained in two RDC columns of 7.62cm diameter, 73.6cm height and 21.9cm diameter, 150cm height were used to evaluate the model predictions. Drop-side mass transfer coefficients were predicted appl...
